Documents for a Self-Employed Residence Permit Application

Applying for a Self-Employed Residence Permit (Сuenta Propia) in Spain requires careful preparation of documents. Their purpose is to confirm your identity, financial stability, professional qualifications, and the viability of your business project. Below is a structured list of the main documents with explanations.

Important: for all documents in a foreign language, a jurado translation is required, performed and certified by a traductor jurado — a sworn translator from the official registry

List of documents for the main applicant:

  1. Valid passport

  2. TIE identification card

Mandatory for applicants who are applying for a modification of residence status while on Spanish territory.

  1. Certificate of completion of studies

Relevant for those changing from a student residence permit (estancia por estudios) to a residence permit with the right to self-employment.

It is necessary to confirm that the full course of study has been successfully completed — this is recorded in an official document from the educational institution.

  1. Proof of financial means

Bank statements or other financial documents confirming the availability of funds for living and launching a business.

The autónomo residence permit program does not have strict minimum amounts like other types of residences. However, the funds must meet two criteria:

  • sufficiency for living — the applicant must show that they are able to cover personal expenses (as well as family expenses if included in the application).

  • implementation of the business plan — the required amount depends on the specifics of the project.

  1. Business plan — key document

The business plan is the central element of the application. It confirms the economic feasibility and viability of your project.

  1. Certificate of project viability

Issued by one of the authorized organizations (ATA, UPTA, etc.). Formally it is not mandatory, but in practice it significantly increases the chances of application approval.

  1. Documents on education and professional qualifications

  • diplomas of relevant education

  • certificates of completed courses and additional education

  • resume

  • if necessary — licenses and permits for professional activity.

  • in case of non-relevant education — documents confirming experience in the required field (work certificates, employment record book, contracts with clients for services)

  1. Professional portfolio

Personal website, links to social networks, examples of completed projects — as additional confirmation of experience and readiness to work.

  1. Preliminary list of clients

Documents confirming interest in your services or product, for example:

  • letters of intent (cartas de intenciones);

  • agreements with suppliers, platforms or companies;

  • business correspondence, commercial proposals, e-mail.

  1. Lease agreement for premises or workspace

It is necessary to confirm the availability of a place to conduct business.

💡

Important: if the business involves remote work (IT, consulting, freelance), a lease agreement is not mandatory. In this case, you should explain where and how the activity will be carried out.

  1. Additional documents (if possible):

  • invoices and receipts — confirmation of payment for equipment, materials or services necessary to launch the business.

💡

Important: if the project does not require significant investments, this item can be omitted or replaced with a detailed description of planned expenses in the business plan.
