If you are planning to work for yourself or open your own business in Spain, it is important to understand for how long the por cuenta propia residence permit is issued and how the renewal process works.
Initial Permit
The residence permit with the right to self-employment is issued for 1 year.
During this period, you are only allowed to conduct activities in the region where the permit was issued.
First Residence Renewal
After the first year, the residence permit can be renewed for 4 years at once.
Important: renewal does not require resubmitting a business plan, however, you must confirm that the business is operating and generating income.
For renewal, confirmation is required of:
active business operations (taxes, reports, social contributions).
financial solvency and viability of the project.
Upon renewal, regional restrictions are lifted, and the entrepreneur can work throughout the entire territory of Spain.
Applying for Permanent Residence
After 5 years of legal residence, you can apply for permanent residence in Spain — Residencia de larga duración. After 10 years of residence — obtaining Spanish citizenship is possible.
